How to Fix a Damaged MBR (Master Boot Record)

If your PC won’t boot and you see messages like these, the MBR (Master Boot Record) may be corrupted:

  • Error loading operating system
  • Missing operating system
  • Invalid partition table
  • Disk boot failure
  • Operating system not found
  • Black screen with no information

Important: MBR repair applies to MBR/Legacy BIOS boot disks. Many modern PCs use UEFI + GPT (no MBR boot code). If your system disk is GPT, use Startup Repair / EFI boot repair methods instead of “fixmbr”.

What is the MBR?

The MBR (Master Boot Record) is the first sector of a traditional MBR-partitioned disk. It contains boot code and a partition table entry that helps the BIOS find the active system partition to start Windows.

If the MBR is damaged, Windows may fail to start even though your files are still on the drive.

Before you start

  • Disconnect extra external drives (USB disks, memory cards). This reduces the chance of repairing the wrong disk.
  • Know your boot mode: if your PC boots in UEFI mode and the disk is GPT, do not use MBR-only tools.
  • If you suspect drive failure (clicking, SMART errors), consider cloning the disk first before doing repairs.

Method 1 (Recommended): Windows 10/11 WinRE repair (no install DVD required)

On Windows 10/11 you can repair boot issues from the built-in recovery environment (WinRE):

  1. Boot into Windows Recovery Environment:
    • If Windows still shows recovery options: Settings → System → Recovery → Advanced startup → Restart now.
    • If Windows won’t boot: power on/off during boot 3 times to trigger Automatic Repair, or boot from a Windows 10/11 USB installer and choose Repair your computer.
  2. Go to Troubleshoot → Advanced options.
  3. Try Startup Repair first (it’s safe and automatic).
  4. If Startup Repair fails, open Command Prompt and use the steps below depending on your disk type.

A) If your system disk is MBR (Legacy BIOS)

  1. In Command Prompt, run:
    bootrec /fixmbr
    bootrec /fixboot
    bootrec /scanos
    bootrec /rebuildbcd
  2. If bootrec /fixboot returns “Access is denied”, try:
    bootsect /nt60 sys
  3. Restart your PC.

B) If your system disk is GPT (UEFI)

For UEFI/GPT systems, the usual fix is rebuilding EFI boot files (not “fixmbr”). A common approach is:

  1. In Command Prompt, locate the EFI System Partition (ESP):
    diskpart
    list vol
Look for a small FAT32 volume (often 100–300MB) labeled System or EFI.
  2. Assign it a drive letter (example uses S:), then rebuild boot files:
    diskpart
    select vol <EFI_VOLUME_NUMBER>
    assign letter=S
    exit

    bcdboot C:\Windows /s S: /f UEFI
  3. Restart your PC.

Tip: If you’re not sure whether the disk is MBR or GPT, you can check in diskpart:

diskpart
list disk
If a disk shows a * under the GPT column, it’s GPT.

Method 2: Repair MBR using Windows 7 installation DVD

  1. Insert the Windows 7 installation DVD and boot from it.
  2. Choose your language/keyboard, then click Repair your computer (not Install now).
  3. Select the Windows installation, then open Command Prompt.
  4. Run:
    bootrec.exe /fixmbr
    bootrec.exe /fixboot
    bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd
  5. Restart the computer.

Method 3: Repair MBR using Windows XP Recovery Console

  1. Insert the Windows XP setup CD and boot from it.
  2. When prompted “Press any key to boot from CD”, press a key.
  3. At the Welcome screen, press R to open Recovery Console (not Windows setup).
  4. Select the Windows installation to repair (usually 1) and enter the Administrator password (blank by default on many systems).
  5. Type:
    fixmbr
Then press Enter and confirm if prompted.
  6. Type exit to reboot.

Method 4 (Easy GUI): Repair MBR with Lazesoft Windows Recovery (Free)

If you don’t have an installation disc, or you prefer a guided, mouse-driven repair, you can use Lazesoft Windows Recovery Home Edition to repair MBR in a few clicks:

  • Step 1: Install Lazesoft Windows Recovery Home Edition on a working PC and create a bootable CD/USB.
  • Step 2: Boot the problem PC from the newly created USB/CD (use the BIOS/UEFI boot menu such as F12 on many systems).
  • Step 3: Follow: Windows Recovery → Boot Crash → Repair MBR.
  • Step 4: Remove the USB/CD and reboot. Make sure your original system drive is set as the first boot device.

The repair is designed to be safe: your data, installed apps, and settings remain on the drive. Once the boot record is repaired, Windows should load normally.

FAQ

Will repairing the MBR delete my files?

Repairing the MBR typically replaces only boot code in the first sector of an MBR disk. It does not erase your partitions or personal files. However, always be cautious if the disk might be failing.

What if I still see “Operating system not found” after MBR repair?

  • Verify the correct disk is first in the boot order.
  • Run Startup Repair again.
  • Check that the system partition is marked Active (MBR/Legacy systems).
  • Consider rebuilding BCD (bootrec /rebuildbcd) or EFI boot files (bcdboot) depending on BIOS/UEFI.
