How to fix the “BOOTMGR is missing” error on Windows Server 2008
Seeing “BOOTMGR is missing. Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart.” after a reboot can feel scary, but in most cases it’s repairable.
BOOTMGR (Windows Boot Manager) is a core boot file used by Windows Server 2008. If it can’t be found or loaded, Windows won’t start and you’ll land on the black error screen.
Common causes
- Wrong boot device (USB drive, external disk, or another internal disk is first in the boot order).
- Corrupted boot sector / MBR due to power loss, failed update, or disk errors.
- Damaged BCD store (Boot Configuration Data) or missing boot files.
- Failing hard drive (bad sectors where boot files live).
Before you start: If the server contains important data and you suspect disk failure (clicking sounds, very slow reads, SMART warnings), consider backing up or cloning the disk first to avoid making things worse.
Quick checks (often fixes it in 30 seconds)
- Disconnect any USB drives, external HDDs, or mounted ISO/iLO virtual media.
- Enter BIOS/Boot Menu and confirm the system disk is the first boot device.
- Restart and see if Windows boots normally.
Solution 1: Repair using a Windows Server 2008 installation DVD
If you have the Windows Server 2008 DVD (or ISO attached via iLO / DRAC), this is the most “official” way.
- Insert/attach the Windows Server 2008 installation media.
- Boot the server from the DVD/ISO.
- When prompted, press a key for “Press any key to boot from CD or DVD…”
- Select language and keyboard, then click Next.
- Click Repair your computer (do not click Install now).
- Select your Windows Server 2008 installation and click Next.
- Try Startup Repair first. Let it complete and reboot.
If Startup Repair can’t fix it: use Command Prompt
Go back to System Recovery Options → Command Prompt and run the following commands:
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuildbcd
If /rebuildbcd finds your Windows installation, type Y to add it. Then reboot.
Optional: check the disk for errors
If the server boots but keeps failing later, check the system volume for file-system errors:
chkdsk C: /f
Tip: If Windows is installed on another drive letter when booted into recovery, adjust C: accordingly.
Solution 2: Repair with Lazesoft Recovery Suite (no Server 2008 DVD needed)
If you don’t have the Windows Server 2008 installation disk, you can fix the boot records using Lazesoft Recovery Suite.
- On a working PC, install Lazesoft Recovery Suite and create a bootable recovery USB or CD.
- Boot the affected Windows Server 2008 machine from the created recovery disk.
- Open the Windows Recovery module and select your Windows installation.
- Run these tools (in order) from Boot Crash:
-
- Missing Windows File Repair (restores missing boot files)
- Repair MBR
- Fix Boot Sector
- Reboot the server and verify it boots normally.
If it still won’t boot
- Double-check the BIOS boot order and that the correct disk is selected.
- If the machine uses RAID, confirm the array is healthy and the controller sees the disks.
- Consider disk failure: clone the drive or recover data first, then reinstall/repair.
